Nutrient Management Planning Courses

We put on a range of statewide and regional courses related to nutrient management including:


The Nutrient Management Planning CourseTwo three day sessions covering the basic concepts of nutrient management on a farm using manure as a fertilizer source. Course cost: $350.

  • The classroom session covers a diverse range of topics in soil fertility, water quality, animal science, agricultural economics and agricultural engineering related to nutrient management (see the course agenda below). 

  • Course participants then attend one of two field and calculation sessions.  The field and calculation sessions focus on how to make calculations and decisions needed to write a nutrient management plan and discussion of topics raised in the classroom course.  The second session includes a visit to the MU Dairy.

This course is recommended by Missouri NRCS for TSP's writing CNMP's.  For Wastewater and CAFO Operators we have applied for 30 Wastewater Operator CEU’s and 36.5 CAFO Operator CEU’s.  For Certified Crop Advisors we have been approved for for 6.0 Soil and Water CEU’s and 22.5 Nutrient Management CEU’s.

This course will be held at The Missouri Cattlemen's Association Building, 2306 Bluff Creek Dr., Columbia, MO.

NRCS Nutrient and Pest Management Certification Exam for TSP's This exam is Module 7 of the Nutrient and Pest Management Considerations in Conservation Planning (Modules 1-7) curriculum from USDA’s AgLearn (www.aglearn.usda.gov) website (or follow the “Receive TSP Training” link at TechReg.usda.gov). The Module 1-6 curriculum is available online and must be completed before taking the Module 7 exam.” See a description of the course curriculum at http://www.nedc.nrcs.usda.gov/catalog/nutandpest.html.

This exam satisfies a portion of the requirements for certification of individuals providing nutrient management and pest management technical service to USDA. A complete listing of the criteria for nutrient management and pest management certification can be found online at TechReg.usda.gov (click on the “Certification Categories” link, then click the “View Criteria” button of CNMP Plan Development—Nutrient Management, Nutrient Management - Organic and Inorganic, and (or) Pest Management as appropriate.

Computer-Assisted Nutrient Management Planning CourseA two day course on how to use SNMP, MMP and other computer resources to write a nutrient management plan. Registration is limited to 11 persons per session. Currently, a grant allows this class to be provided at no charge to Missouri residents.

"Farmer Write a Plan" Course - Farmers are able to write a nutrient management plan for their farm in this two-part class. Farmers work in a mobile computer lab to complete the steps of writing a plan with the help of the course instructors. Farmers must have current soil samples (taken within two years) or soil sample their farm between the first and second session of the class.
